HOW TO CLAIM ON YOUR PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE POLICY

READ YOUR POLICY DOCUMENT

Different health insurers have different claims processes. If you’re planning to seek private treatment, read the small print of your policy or check your insurer’s website to see whether there’s specific guidance. Check if your policy covers you for therapy consultations. If it does, how many sessions and check whether you need a referral from your GP or a Psychiatrist.

SPEAK TO YOUR GP

(If you dont need a referall from your GP, go to step 3)
Start by speaking to your GP about your condition as you normally would. Your GP can refer you for private treatment. There are two main types of referral;

  • An open referral, where your GP doesn’t address the letter to a specific consultant, or
  • Named referral, where a specialist is listed on the letter.

Read the terms and conditions of your policy to check which one your provider will want.

CALL YOUR PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE PROVIDER

Next, call your provider and explain the situation. What you’ll need when you call will differ from provider to provider, but consider the following:

  • Your policy number
  • Details of what your GP told you
  • Details of your referral.
  • Details about your condition

Once your insurer has agreed to cover the therapy, please give us your policy number and authorisation code, which we need to book your appointment. Please also ask your insurer the number of sessions that will be covered.

CALL YOUR PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE PROVIDER (AGAIN) ONCE YOU HAVE SEEN A SPECIALIST

Once you have seen a specialist, call you provider again to let them know what steps will be taken next. Also, make sure you understand how you’ll pay for any consultations or treatment – either you’ll have to pay and claim the money back, or you’ll provider will pay directly.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO COMPLAIN

If your claim doesn’t pan out as you expect, or you feel that your insurer has treated you unfairly, don’t be afraid to complain.

Speak to your provider first, but if it isn’t proving helpful (and you have exhausted their complaints process) take the matter up with the Financial Ombudsman Service.

CLIENT CONFIDENTIALITY

Client confidentiality is the requirement that Psychologists protect their client’s privacy by not revealing the contents of therapy.

Client confidentiality includes not just the contents of therapy, but the fact that a client is in therapy. For example, the Psychologist will not acknowledge their clients if they run into them outside of therapy in an effort to protect client confidentiality. Other ways confidentiality is protected include:

  • Not leaving revealing information on voicemail
  • Not acknowledging to outside parties that a client has an appointment
  • Not discussing the contents of therapy with a third party without the explicit permission of the client

EXCEPTIONS TO CONFIDENTIALITY & UK LAW

Client confidentiality sometimes has to be broken if your Psychologist is required to do so by law. For example if you disclose to your Psychologist your intent of harming yourself or others, including children. Or if you disclose intent of committing a serious criminal offence or terrorism. This may also apply if your Psychologist learn of someone else who may be being harmed or in danger, or is planning to harm others.

This does not mean that your Psychologist will go running to the police the moment that he/she hear about something illegal. It is a part of the Psychologist ethical commitments to you to inform you that the law may not protect your confidentiality.

PRIVACY

CODE OF ETHICS

All Psychologist working in association with Canwillbebetter™ follow the code of ethics of the British Psychological Society. Your discussions with your Psychologist, and any notes they write, are confidential and will not be disclosed to any other person without your consent. Exceptions to this rule would be if your Psychologist is required to disclose information by a court of law, or in order to protect you or another person from significant harm.

In addition, all Psychologists are required by their profession to have regular supervision sessions where they may discuss aspects of your therapy. They will not however reveal your identity during these sessions. Information held about you on Canwillbebetter™ data systems is covered by the Data Protection Act 1998 and will not be disclosed to third parties.

In order to help you and improve our services, we need to collect and store information about you. Your information will remain confidential and stored securely within Canwillbebetter™. HOW MUCH DOES THERAPY COST? AND WHY IS IT SO EXPENSIVE?

Good question! We believe our fees fairly reflect the value of our service, no less our experience and training. Session fees are £110 – £150 per session for individual therapy, counselling. For couples therapy and for individuals funded by organisations we charge £140 – 190 per session.

BECOMING A CHARTERED PSYCHOLOGIST AND REGISTERED CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST COSTS A TON OF MONEY

It takes a lot of study and tons of money to become a Chartered Psychologist. The title of Chartered Psychologist is legally recognised and reflects only the highest standard of psychological knowledge and expertise in UK.
